Live in Korea

I was sitting on the roof the the building next to mine. The rain had subsided for an hour or so and, as I looked at my rain-soaked town, I decided it was time to do my best Beatles impression and put on a rooftop show. My friend Darryl and I have begun playing together at random places in the neighborhood. Two whites with guitars playing western music always attracts a crowd- even though Darryl can only play 2 chords and my singing is weak. Last week, we got together at midnight, climbed the mountain/hill behind our place and played for a couple hours to couples sitting in the park. We took our guitars ontop the roof, got a jug of beer and began playing for the Koreans walking below. We went through a Pink Floyd melody that I've been working on, a couple Beatles tunes and then, in celebration of America and Canada, we played some Tom Petty and Neil Young tunes. I still can't get over the disappointment I felt finding out that Neil Young was Canadian. Oh well. Playing in the damp, midst and mist of the monsoon was overwhelming to say the least. Sitting on the ledge, looking down at the busy Koreans, we were high (figuratively and literally). We decided to sustain this high and go downtown. My favorite bar in Korea, Cool Bar, was doing a duel Canada Day and 4th of July party offering free drinks to the expatriates. This is the one place in Korea to find decent live music. I'd met the western band a few weeks back and they invited me to play after their set was done. We drank there for a few hours and then I hit the stage for my second performance of the night. There were more whiteys in one place than I'd seen since I've been here. I played solo and did Radiohead's "Lucky" and wanted to do "Rockin in the Free World" but the band was too drunk to back me up at this point and I don't think that song works without a full band. I hadn't really expected any sort of 4th celebration here, so I was satisfied and impressed that a Korean bar acknowledged our holiday and even gave us a night.
